SFPL launces “ecocard”
The San Francisco Public Library (which I’ve actually visited before) has launched a new ecocard. The newer, greener card is made from biodegradeable corn, as opposed to less-environmentally-friendly plastic.
From the blog EcoSalon:
Check out the new ecocard. It’s a true-blue alternative that might catch on in other cities if it proves to hold up to wear and tear. [...]
Information (&) Poverty
Information, poverty, and information poverty are all distinct but related concepts, and it’s been the focus of a lot of research I’ve done while in graduate school. With the G-20 summit in London about to kickoff, I felt it was a good time to share a handful of articles describing the links between literacy, libraries, the economy, [...]
Open for Questions
I’ve commented before on how impressed I am with the Obama administration’s excellent use of social networking and Web 2.0 technologies. Somehow I’m continually amazed at how different this adminstration has been so far, at least in terms of technology.
In latest developments, the White House has released (functionally) a short-term and topic-specific Digg clone called [...]
W-A-S-H-I-N-G-T-O-N, Baby, D-C!
Washington, D.C., it’s paradise to me
It’s not because it is the grand old seat
of precious freedom and democracy, no no no
It’s not the greenery turning gold in fall
the scenery circling the Mall
It’s just that’s where my baby lives, that’s all
– From the song “Washington, DC,” by the Magnetic Fields
No, my significant other doesn’t live in [...]
Story: “Shrinking Music Videos”
Yesterday morning, NPR’s Morning Edition closed with a story about how music videos have changed in the past twenty-five years. Once the audiovisual staple of MTV, music videos have moved to the more ubiquitous channels of the World Wide Web, cell phones, and PDAs. As a result, video directors have had to change their style, [...]
“Opportunity to Advocate”
I feel like I don’t do as much with teen services as I could, and I know that I don’t do quite as much as I used to. Part of it’s because I figured that scaled-back programming might work better (and so far it has), and because I’ve already got a lot of other job [...]
“Prop 8: The Musical”
Why yes, I do think this is awesome.
Thanks to Karen Schneider for sharing this, and for her thoughts on Day Without a Gay.
“Prop 8 – The Musical” starring Jack Black, John C. Reilly, and many more… by Jack Black
Predictions for 2009: SNS Edition
With the end of the year around the corner, here are my predictions for what the social web will look like in 2009. Some of these are kind of “well, duh,” but I think they still deserve to be said.
MySpace will continue to be dominated by socio-commercial interests, a site more for promotion than for [...]
Every Game is Important
I don’t follow sports much, but for some reason I made myself watch at least a couple football games over the Thanksgiving holidays. Hearing the phrase “rivals week” over and over somehow piqued my interest, and since I hadn’t had a break in a while, I wanted to celebrate Thanksgiving with every contemporary tradition possible [...]
I voted yesterday
I got in line at 9:15 (having left work immediately after an early morning staff meeting) to cast my vote at the community center around the corner from my library. By that time, a long line of people, bundled-up but still shivering, was already ahead of me, wrapped around the front of the building and [...]
